Softball Drops Two to Dixie

KANEOHE, HI (March 12, 2013)- Despite strong starts from pitchers Kristen Caskey and Melissa Kirby, the Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (8-10, 1-7) dropped a doubleheader to 22nd ranked Dixie State (15-8, 6-4) by a combined three runs. The Sea Warriors fell in game one 4-2 and dropped game two 3-2.

In game one, HPU registered twice as many hits as the Red Storm, but a costly error proved to be the difference. The Sea Warriors held a 2-1 lead going in to the fourth inning before a Red Storm double, an error and a three-run homerun led to three unearned runs in the inning.

Down by two runs, the Sea Warriors threatened in the bottom of the seventh. HPU loaded the bases on singles from Chante Tesoro, Keila Elderts and a walk from Caira Pires, but failed to push a run across in the inning, stranding three of their total 10 runners left on base in the final frame.

Caskey pitched seven strong innings while only allowing one earned run on four hits.

Game two was a pitcher's duel early, scoreless after three innings. The Red Storm was able to score three runs in the fourth, but the Sea Warriors answered with two of their own in the bottom half on a RBI triple from Elderts and a Nicole Morrow RBI single.

Kirby would shut down the Red Storm after the fourth; only allowing two hits the rest of the way. HPU was again able to get the game tying run to second base in the final inning, but failed to get the timely hit.

Tesoro finished the day going 3-6 at the plate with a pair of walks and a run scored. Elderts went 3-6 from the dish, adding a walk, a run and an RBI.

Kirby spread 10 hits over seven innings, but only allowed two earned runs.

The Sea Warriors will return to the diamond in a week when they face Grand Canyon at Howard A. Okita Field on March 19th; first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
