WAIPAHU, HI (March 13, 2013)- Senior
Cory Yuh struck out 10 batters on his way to a complete game shutout as the Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (15-4, 6-1) defeated Dixie State (12-4-1, 4-3-1) by the score of 7-0. The victory came in game one of a big four game series with the Red Storm.
The Sea Warriors got on the board in the third after
Wade Tamaru led off the inning with a double followed by a
Derek Nakasato single two batters later to bring him home. HPU would move Nakasato around, and he would score on a throwing error by the Red Storm catcher to give the Sea Warriors a 2-0 lead.
The Sea Warriors pushed two more across in the fifth after Nakasato crushed a triple to right center followed by a deep home run by
Kale Sumner that disappeared in to the Waipahu night. With one more run in the seventh, and two in the eighth, the Sea Warriors held a commanding 7-0.
As good as the Sea Warrior bats were, the story of the game was the effort of Yuh on the mound. Yuh was dominant throughout, striking out 10 while spreading around five hits and four walks. The Red Storm was only able to advance one base runner past first base the entire game as Yuh sat down 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.
The win is Yuh's second complete game of the season and drops his ERA to a paltry 0.80
The two teams go right back at it tomorrow in games two and three of the series at Hans L'Orange Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
