Déjà Vu, Baseball Takes Two

HONOLULU, HI (March 1, 2013) – For the second consecutive day, the Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team took both ends of the doubleheader at UH-Hilo, HPU won game one 7-0 and game two 4-2. The Sea Warriors are now 11-3 and winners of seven straight games.

In game one, HPU jumped on Hilo starter Jimmy Dela Cruz and tagged him for two runs in the first inning. Jordan Oshiro led off the game with a walk and scored without the benefit of a hit, he was moved to second, stole third base and then scored on an error. Marvin Campbell, who reached on the error eventually scored on a RBI single from Russell Doi.

After that, Dela Cruz would settle down and shut out HPU for the next five innings. However, Hilo would not get a chance to get back into the game as HPU starter Tre Haliburton-Goeas was masterful.  Haliburton-Goeas tossed eight innings, giving up just four base runners while striking out nine Vulcans.

The HPU bats chased Dela Cruz in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Oshiro.

HPU would end all suspense in the ninth inning as it scored four more times. HPU got RBI from Campbell and Oshiro in the frame and took advantage of shoddy UH-Hilo defense that committed two errors.

Oshiro and Doi each had two hits games as Oshiro led the club with two RBI.

Reliever Matthew Minnich struck out the side in order in the bottom of the 9th inning.

HPU again jumped in front of UH-Hilo in game two with a run in the third inning. A two-out RBI single from Campbell scored Oshiro to put HPU up 1-0.

Each team scored twice in the fourth inning, leaving HPU with a 3-2 lead. The Sea Warrior runs would come on a sacrifice fly by Codey Ellenwood and a single by catcher Lanan Rice-Kashima.

HPU would tack on another run in the fifth inning without a hit, scoring on a UHH error. It wouldn't matter however, as UHH did not score the rest of the way.

The HPU bullpen was perfect, throwing three and two-third innings of relief without surrendering a hit. Jeremy Fujimoto picked up the win as Bryson Gauthe and Minnich made sure the HPU lead stood up.

Oshiro continued his strong day in the nightcap with a pair of hits.

HPU returns home to host PacWest newcomer Holy Names at Hans L'Orange for a four-game set starting on March 8th at 4:00 PM.
