RIVERSIDE, CA (March 26, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (18-12, 9-9) won game two of today's PacWest doubleheader against California Baptist (17-10, 10-2) in extra innings to snap its recent losing streak. HPU lost the first game 7-4, but rebounded for the 7-6 win in game two.
HPU struck first in game one. HPU got four hits in the first inning on its way to a run;
Chad Bolibol drove in
Marvin Campbell, who had tripled, on an infield single.
CBU would take the lead in the third inning as it scored three times.
The Sea Warriors regained the lead, 4-3, in top of the fifth by matching CBU's three run outburst. With the bases full of Sea Warriors,
Kale Sumner doubled to left field to clear the bases.
The home team continued to swing hot bats, the Lancers added three more runs in the sixth inning to lead 6-4. Cal Baptist added another run in the eighth inning to make the final score 7-4.
Matthew Minnich threw two innings in relief for HPU, he surrendered a run, but it was unearned.
The Sea Warriors had 11 hits, two each from Campbell, Bolibol, Sumner, and
Codey Ellenwood.
The theme of three-run innings continued into game two as both HPU and CBU scored three times in the opening frame. With a runner on second base and one out in the HPU first, the Lancers intentionally walked Campbell to get to Bolibol. Bolibol made them pay with a single to right on a full count scoring
Jordan Oshiro. The strategy would further backfire as
Kale Sumner smoked a double down the left field line to score Campbell. Later in the inning, Sumner would score on a single by
Jordan Inamasu.
In the second inning, CBU pitched to Campbell and he responded with a RBI single scoring Oshiro. Sumner would again drive Campbell in with another double.
Each team would score a run in the third inning to make it 6-4. HPU's run came off a RBI single from
Tyler Tokunaga.
CBU scratched out single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game. Neither team was able to break the tie, sending the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 9th inning, Sumner led off by being hit by a pitch.
Keanu Kapana moved Sumner to second on a sacrifice bunt. He then moved up to third on a wild pitch. HPU scored the winning run on a bunt by Inamasu that plated Sumner.
The HPU bullpen was tremendous.
Bryson Gauthe,
Edward Trovato, and
Pulama Silva combined for five shutout innings with no hits allowed.
The offense pounded out 13 more hits, including three from
Wade Tamaru. Inamasu, Sumner, Oshiro, and Tokunaga each had two hits.
The Sea Warriors next head to Point Loma Nazarene to play a doubleheader on March 29th at 12:00 PM.
