KANEOHE, HI (March 26, 2013) –
Kristen Caskey threw a complete game four-hitter to help the Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (11-11, 4-8) split a doubleheader with Azusa Pacific (15-13, 8-8). The Sea Warriors won game one 3-1 before the Cougars took game two 9-6.
In game one, the Sea Warriors got on the board early after
Keila Elderts crushed a double to right center, scoring
Chante Tesoro, who led off the game with a walk.
The Cougars manufactured a run in the third inning before Caskey set down the next 12 Cougars in order.
The Sea Warriors would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth with the benefit of three Cougar errors in the inning. A
Dorian Acierto RBI single proved to be the winning hit after she knocked in pinch runner
Toni Baysa, and scored one batter later after another Cougar error.
Azusa Pacific would threaten in the seventh by getting the tying run to second, but Caskey worked out of the jam to pick up her fifth win of the season. The win was Caskey's eighth complete game of the season and drops her ERA to an even 2.00.
After a pitcher's duel in game one, game two proved to be a more offensive affair as the two teams combined for 26 hits.
Each team was able to score single runs in the first, but HPU was able to break out in the second. HPU scored four times to take a 5-2 lead.
The Cougars answered with two runs in the top of the fifth, but HPU scored one of its own in the bottom half and held a 6-5 lead heading in to the final inning.
Down a run in the seventh the Cougars pounded out four runs on four hits and one costly HPU error, to steal game two 9-6.
Morrow, Elderts and
Celina Garces each registered three hits for the Sea Warriors in the doubleheader while Acierto led the way with two RBI. Elderts picked up her team-high 13th steal in 14 attempts.
HPU returns to action on Friday for a doubleheader against BYU-Hawaii at Howard A. Okita Field; first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
