Caskey Tosses Complete Game Three-Hitter in Softball Split

Kaneohe, HI (March 5, 2013)- Freshman Kristen Caskey picked up her third win of the season, tossing a complete game three-hitter as the Hawai'i Pacific (7-5,0-2) Softball Team split a doubleheader with visiting Martin Methodist College (9-7). The Sea Warriors won game one 6-2, but were tripped up in game two 7-6.

Caskey was brilliant on the mound, throwing a perfect game through three innings while only allowing three total MMC base runners. After setting down the first 10 batters, the Red Hawks were finally able to muster out an infield single in the fourth. The next Red Hawks batter belted a home run to left field and the Sea Warriors found themselves down 2-0 early.

HPU answered in the fifth, scoring three runs after pounding out five hits. Caskey, Caira Pires and Dorian Acierto each earned RBI singles in the inning.

Leading 3-2 in the sixth, the Sea Warriors added three more insurance runs including a Lauren Beard pinch hit RBI. Caskey closed the game strong, earning her third strikeout of the game on the final Red Hawk batter and a 6-2 victory.

In game two it was another freshman, Alysia Maddison, getting the start for the Sea Warriors. The Red Hawks were able to score lone runs in the first, second and fourth innings off Maddison before she found herself in a jam in the fifth. Melissa Kirby would come on in relief and get HPU out of the jam, holding the Red Hawks to just two runs in the inning.

Still leading 6-5 heading in to the sixth, the Sea Warriors lost the lead in the top of the inning on a Red Hawks two-run double. The Sea Warriors struggled to come up with the big hit down the stretch and dropped game two 7-6.

Pires had a big day at the plate for the Sea Warriors totaling four RBI over both games. Speedster Keila Elderts was on-base all afternoon, going 3-5 at the plate, with two walks, five runs scored and four stolen bases. HPU leadoff batter Chante Tesoro turned in another solid effort going 4-7 from the plate while scoring three runs.

The Sea Warriors jump back in to PacWest play on Friday, taking on California Baptist at Howard A. Okita Field; first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
