HONOLULU, HI (April 12, 2012) – The third-ranked Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team (16-1) closed out the regular season with a 4-0 victory over Division I Cal State Northridge (10-8). The victory is HPU's seventh in a row as it now heads in to postseason play.
The Sea Warriors got off to a good start, sweeping the Matadors in doubles play. The pair of
Vivian Hansen and
Magdalena Smejova worked an 8-2 win at first doubles, while Lea-Kruse-Utermann and
Karen Ramirez were victorious 8-5 in second doubles.
Because the two teams were playing under Division I rules, HPU would get just one point for the doubles sweep before moving to singles competition.
Momentum continued for the Sea Warriors in singles play as No. 34
Celina Goetti won a straight sets victory at second singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Ramirez coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles. After Kruse-Utermann defeated her competition 6-4, 6-2 at sixth singles, HPU had the necessary points for the win and the remaining individual matches were left unfinished.
With the regular season complete, HPU will now move on to the PacWest Championships where they will be the number one seed. The championships will be held April 18th-20th at Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipahu.
