SAN FRANSICSCO, CA (April 18, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (25-16, 14-10) used a pair of double-digit innings to sweep Academy of Art (13-30, 9-17) in the first double header of its six-game road trip. The Sea Warriors rallied for a 10-run seventh to win game one, 12-3 and coasted to an 18-9 victory after a 10-run fifth inning in game two.
Alysia Maddison got the start for the Sea Warriors in game one and pitched well, allowing just three runs off four hits in seven innings of work. Despite the strong start from the freshman, the Sea Warriors found themselves down 3-2 heading in to the seventh inning.
Celina Garces led off the inning with a bunt single and a pair of HPU walks loaded the bases before Maddison helped her cause with a two-RBI single. The Sea Warriors would bat around in the inning as Garces added another base hit to load the bases before
Chante Tesoro cleared them with a double to right center. After entering the inning down 3-2, HPU emerged with a 12-3 victory.
In game two the Sea Warriors again found themselves in a big hole, trailing 9-1 after three innings. HPU closed the gap to 9-3 in the fourth with a pair of runs before a big inning in the fifth gave them the lead for good.
Maddison was again the catalyst for the rally, hitting a two-run home run to left field knocking in
Keila Elderts who singled earlier in the inning. A Garces two-run double and an RBI single by
Nicole Morrow, combined with five unearned runs off three Urban Knights errors helped HPU grab a 13-9 lead. The Columbia Blue and Kelly Green would add five more runs in the game, but it wouldn't matter as Maddison shut the Urban Knights down the rest of the way.
Maddison had a monster day picking up the victory in both games while going 5-8 from the plate with five RBI and four runs scored. Tesoro also had a big day from her leadoff spot, going 5-9 with three runs and three RBI. Garces finished 5-8 with five RBI with three runs scored.
The Sea Warriors pounded out a season high 30 runs on 39 base-hits and 13 walks in the double header.
HPU returns to the diamond Saturday to face Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, CA. The Sea Warriors won its only previous match against NDNU, 9-5, at the Mizuno tournament of Champions earlier in the season.
