BELMONT, CA (April 20, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (26-17, 15-11) rallied from an early deficit in game one, but failed to do so in game two, splitting a double header with Note Dame de Namur(29-17, 19-9). HPU earned a 7-6 victory in game one, NDNU prevailed in game two 8-6.
The Sea Warriors struck first in game one after
Alysia Maddison homered as the third batter of the game giving HPU an early two run lead. NDNU answered with three runs in each the second and third innings to put the visitors in a hole. Down 6-3 HPU began to chip away.
In the fourth,
Caira Pires doubled to start the inning and
Dorian Acierto notched an RBI-single bringing her home. Acierto proceeded to steal second and third base before scoring on a
Melissa Awa fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The Sea Warriors would tack on another run in the fifth on another Maddison homer, this one a solo shot, tying the game at six.
In the seventh the Sea Warriors played small ball, after the speed of
Keila Elderts forced a bad throw, helping
Chante Tesoro move over to third on the play. The Argonauts intentional walked Maddison to load the bases, but
Caira Pires was able to hit a ball deep enough to score Tesoro on a sacrifice fly to give HPU its first lead of the game.
The Argonauts would manage a pair of hits in the bottom of the seventh, but catcher
Nicole Morrow would nail consecutive base runners attempting to steal, sealing the victory for the Green and Blue.
Melissa Kirby earned the victory for HPU after relieving Maddison in the third inning. The senior hurler allowed just one unearned run in five innings of work while spreading six hits.
Kirby started game two on the mound for HPU, but a series of costly Sea Warriors errors would prove to be too much to overcome as five of the eight runs Kirby allowed were unearned.
NDNU scored first pushing across four runs in the opening frame. HPU answered with two of their own in the second inning, but the Argonauts registered three more in the third. Down 7-2 heading in to the sixth, HPU would rally to make it a close game.
Toni Baysa opened the HPU sixth with a double and would move to third after a Tesoro walk and an NDNU error. Maddison came up big at the plate again, with a two-run single to close the gap to 7-5. Pomai Kalakau cut the deficit to one with an RBI double, but the catcher would be left stranded on second base.
The Sea Warriors managed to get the winning run to the plate in the seventh, but couldn't produce the big hit to pull off the comeback.
Maddison continues her dominate hitting performance on the road trip going 5-6 from the plate with six RBI and three runs scored. Tesoro was on base all day after going 5-8 while registering three RBI and three runs scored.
After a 3-1 start to the road trip, the Sea Warriors return to action tomorrow against Holy Names in Oakland, CA. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM PST.
