SB Notebook: Softball Thinks Pink on Senior Day

KANEOHE, HI (April 26, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific softball team has dedicated the last doubleheader of the season to breast cancer awareness. On senior day for Lauren Beard, Chante Tesoro, Erin Fujita, Melissa Awa, Melissa Kirby, Pomaikai Kalakau, Nicole Morrow, Celina Garces, and Caira Pires the Sea Warriors will be wearing pink and collecting donations to help fight this disease. First pitch is scheduled for noon tomorrow at Howard A. Okita field.

In the regional mix: The HPU softball team is ranked 9th in the West Region for the second consecutive week. At the conclusion of the season, the top eight teams will be invited to the regional playoffs. The Sea Warriors have two games left with Chaminade (25-17) who is unranked and two games at UH-Hilo (33-17) who is ranked 7th in the latest poll.

Picking up some hardware: Freshman Alysia Maddison has been selected the 12th Pacific West Conference Pitcher of the Week for 2013.

The conference announced the softball award on Tuesday, April 23, for games contested April 15-21.
Maddison guided the Sea Warriors to a 5-1 week both at the plate and on the mound.

In six starts she hit .550 by going 11 for 20 with 10 runs scored, 15 runs batted in, two doubles, four homers and five walks. She also had a sacrifice fly, a 1.250 slugging percentage and a .615 on-base rate.

On the mound she produced a 2-0 record with a save in four appearances. She started and completed one game, struck out seven hitters over 15.2 innings of work, and allowed nine earned runs.

Chante Tesoro, Celina Garces, Sharae Esprecion, and Toni Baysa were named to The Hawai'i Tourism Authority PacWest Fantastic 15. The PacWest Media Office contributed to this report.
