KANEOHE, HI (April 27, 2013)— The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (30-17, 19-11) sent nine seniors out on top in their final home game with a sweep of Chaminade (25-19, 17-11). The Sea Warriors won game one in walk-off fashion, 6-5, before dominating game two 8-1.
Beyond senior day, the doubleheader had major NCAA West Region implications as HPU is seeking a top-eight seed and a berth in to the regional playoffs. They are ranked ninth in the most recent rankings.
The Sea Warriors struck first in game one when
Dorian Acierto notched a two-run double, scoring
Keila Elderts and
Alysia Maddison. The lead wouldn't last however, as Chaminade answered with five runs in the top of the second.
The five-run second inning would be it for Chaminade as Maddison would allow just one hit over the final five innings.
Despite loading the bases in the fifth and sixth innings, the Sea Warriors managed just one run and trailed 5-3 heading in to the final inning.
With one out,
Celina Garces doubled to right center followed by a Pomai Kalakau walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before
Sharae Esprecion tied the game with a two-RBI base hit to left field. Esprecion advanced to second base after a Chaminade error setting the stage for
Keila Elderts to be the hero.
With two down and Esprecion on second, Elderts worked the count into her favor and slapped a pitch into left field scoring the speedy Esprecion who was off on contact.
Maddison picked up the win in game one, giving up five runs on seven hits, in seven innings of work. The freshman struck out three.
Taking momentum from game one, HPU jumped on the 'Swords right away in game two scoring six runs in the first.
Elderts drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Acierto singled to right field scoring Elderts and moved to second on the throw home. Garces followed with a walk before
Nicole Morrow cleared the bases with a two RBI double to left, and the route was on.
HPU added runs in the fourth and sixth as the Sea Warriors took game two 8-1.
Acierto, Morrow, Kalakau and Esprecion each finished the doubleheader with two RBI each. Elderts finished the day with four runs and four hits including the walk-off winner in game one.
With the win, the Sea Warriors keep their regional hopes alive before traveling to UH-Hilo on May 4th. The Vulcans are currently ranked seventh in the West Region, two spots ahead of HPU.
