Softball Starts Road Trip with Sweep

SAN RAFAEL, CA (April 2, 2013) - Kristen Caskey picked up her team leading eighth win of the season as the Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (17-11, 10-8) defeated Dominican University (5-31, 0-18) in the first double header of its mainland road trip. HPU was victorious in game one 4-2 and took game two 10-3.

Despite a strong start from Caskey, the Sea Warriors found themselves down 1-0 after three innings. The HPU bats came alive in fourth inning, striking for two runs.

Celina Garces kicked off the inning with a triple and came home after a Caira Pires RBI single. Keila Elderts would knock in pinch runner Courtney Ahlo three batters later giving HPU a 2-1 lead that it would not relinquish.

Caskey pitched well in game one, giving up just two earned runs off six hits. The complete game is her 11th of the season and she now leads the PacWest in innings per appearance with averaging 6.31.

HPU went with another freshman, Alysia Maddison, on the mound for game two. Maddison was solid giving up just two earned runs off six hits in six innings off work.

The Sea Warriors scored early and often, pushing across two runs in each of the first three innings. Maddison helped her own cause with an RBI double in the first inning and a two-RBI double in the second. Celina Garces, Chante Tesoro, and Caira Pires each added RBI base hits and the Sea Warriors held a 6-2 lead after three innings.

HPU scored four runs in the final three innings to win going away.

As good as Maddison was on the mound, she was even better at the plate going 3-4 with three RBI in game two. Elderts continued her strong season at the plate going 4-8 with an RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader.

The road trip continues tomorrow as the HPU next heads to Oakland to face Holy Names at Thrasher Park. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 PM PST.
