TURLOCK, CA (April 5, 2013) - The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (18-13) fell 8-5 in extra innings in game one of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions to Sonoma State (27-8). The Sea Warriors rallied from a 5-3 deficit to send the game to extra innings before giving up three runs in the eighth.
Sonoma State struck first, scratching out a run in the first inning off of HPU starter
Alysia Maddison.
Caira Pires answered with a game tying home run for the Sea Warriors in the bottom of the second inning, but the Seawolves answered with three in the top off the third chasing Maddison from the game.
Down 5-3 heading in to the bottom of the sixth inning, HPU rallied for three runs to tie the game.
Kelia Elderts singled up the middle and reached third base on a throwing error after the Seawolves failed to catch her stealing second.
Nicole Morrow followed with an RBI double to right center, and scored one batter later after Pires singled through the left side.
After both teams failed to score in the seventh inning, the game went to extra innings where Sonoma State would push across three runs to secure the win.
Pires finished the game 2-3 at the plate with a run and two RBI. Second baseman
Sharae Esprecion went 1-3 at the dish with a pair of RBI.
Pool play for the Tournament on Champions continues tomorrow as the Sea Warriors have games at 8:45 AM, 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM against Western Oregon, Notre Dame de Namur, and Cal State Stanislaus respectively.
