TURLOCK, CA (April 6, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (19-14) picked up its first win in pool play of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions, defeating Western Oregon (19-19) by the score of 5-1. The game was the first of three on the day for HPU.
A day after being shut out by Simon Fraser, the Sea Warrior bats were held at bay until the sixth inning when they put up three runs to seal the game.
Protecting a 2-1 lead, pitcher
Kristen Caskey led off the inning with a single and was lifted for
Erin Fujita who came in to pinch run.
Dorian Acierto dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Fujita over to second base; she also stole third on the next play. Freshman
Alysia Maddison reached base on an error that scored Fujita, she also stole second base on the next play. Right fielder
Toni Baysa doubled home Maddison and then scored on a
Chante Tesoro double.
The three-run sixth gave HPU a 5-1 lead it would not relinquish.
Caskey was again strong on the mound, giving up just one run on six hits while striking out two. The win is her 10th of the season.
Offensively HPU was led by Tesoro who went 2-3 from the plate with two RBI. Baysa finished 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
With game one complete, the Sea Warriors next play Notre Dame de Namur in game two of today's pool play. The Sea Warrior's third game of the day is at 6:00 PM PST against Cal State Stanislaus.
