SURPRISE, AZ (May 9, 2013) – The fifth-ranked Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team lost a hard fought match, 5-1, to top-ranked Barry University (27-0) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships.

The Sea Warriors gave Barry a stiff test in doubles play, but could not pull off a victory. The seventh-ranked team of Petr Michnev and Gerald Moretti pushed the second-ranked pair in the nation but fell 8-6. Max Hertl and Jaume Martinez-Vich also played well, but met an 8-6 defeat.

Barry added another win at fourth singles to start singles action. Down 4-0, the Sea Warriors turned the heat up in singles play. Fifteenth-ranked Martinez-Vich defeated #26 Max Wimmer in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to get HPU on the board. However, Barry closed the match with a win at fifth singles.

Second-ranked Michnev had #4 Marco Mokrzycki on the ropes early with a 7-6 first set win, he led most of the second set before Mokrzycki tied it up with a 7-6 win of his own. The top of the HPU lineup was strong as Max Hertl (3rd singles) won the first set against #23 Romain Costamagna and led 5-4 in the second when play was stopped. Like Michnev, Clemens Graute won the first set and was headed to a third set at the end of the match.  

The Sea Warriors closed 2013 with a 19-4 record, a top five ranking, and an appearance in the Elite Eight.
