Box Score HONOLULU, HI (September 6, 2013) – For the second consecutive night, the Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (3-0) toppled one of the power teams in another conference. This Aloha Friday the victim was Lewis University, picked second in its league and receiving votes in the national top 25 poll, but it was far from easy (25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 25-21).
"That was a tough grind it out match for us tonight," said HPU Head Coach
Daryl Kapis.
The match featured 15 ties and four lead changes, including nine ties in the hotly contested first set. The match went back and forth, with Lewis leading 18-17 in the late stages.
Amanda Moriarty, playing her best offense of the young season, tied the game with a kill. Elizabeth Culpeper gave HPU a lead it would not relinquish at 20-19.
Just like the previous night, HPU struggled in the second set. Lewis flew out to an 8-2 lead, but HPU later trimmed it to 13-11. However, the Sea Warriors could get no closer.
Lewis stayed hot in the third set with a 3-0 and then 5-2 lead, but a 6-0 run turned the momentum back to the blue and green sideline. HPU's lead would grow to four several times, but the match still was eventually tied at 20. Kills from
Haley Doerfler and
Samantha Rummans coupled with three Lewis errors iced the third set.
"I'm happy we started playing with some confidence and energy after losing the second set," commented Kapis.
The fourth set was HPU's turn to jump in front early. While Lewis hung around, HPU held a four-point lead for the majority of the set. Still, the score was just 22-20 in the waning moments. Doerfler and
Kasey Thompson brought HPU to the brink, and fittingly
Pomai Recca ended the match with a hammer job kill.
Recca was again unbelievable, seemingly having more pace on the ball than any other player on the floor. She registered 18 kills with a robust .441 hitting percentage. The freshman from Waimanalo now has 45 kills in her first three matches of college volleyball.
"Pomai had a great match, leading us not only with her energy but with some really great spirit," said Kapis. Â Â Â Â Â

Rummans was second on the club with seven kills as Doerfler and Moriarty each had six.
Marie Fujii again led the way in the assist category with 26. The other member of the two-headed setting monster,
Hannah Schuett, had 15 helpers.
Chelsey Buyuan probably had her best night of 2013 with 29 digs. Recca notched another double-double with 17 digs of her own. Moriarty added eight digs while Fujii had seven.
HPU will wrap up its four-game home stand tomorrow against Fort Hays State University at 6:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Priory.
