Box Score OAKLAND, CA (October 6, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (6-7, 4-3) blasted Holy Names (1-14, 1-8) 3-0 (25-18, 25-8, 25-23) in the final game of its mainland road trip on Monday.
Maybe the Sharks were anxious to get home and start their eight-game homestand or maybe they were just blowing off some steam after a murder's row of early season opponents. Whatever the case, HPU made short work of Holy Names winning in just one hour and 20 minutes.
In the first two sets, HPU trailed just once and HNU managed only three ties. In the second set, the Sharks hit a robust .400 as a team while holding the opponents to literally nothing (.000). Double-digits leads were common place for HPU early in the match.
However, the home team wasn't going to go quietly. HPU fell behind early and eventually trailed 18-11 in the third set. The Sharks then snapped out of it with nine consecutive points to regain the lead. Still the Hawks wouldn't back down and claimed five of the next six points to lead 23-21. An HNU error and back-to-back aces from
Pomai Recca put HPU on the brink.
Elizabeth Culpepper then put an exclamation mark on the sweep with a kill to end it.
Culpepper had a highlight reel type of night, accounting for 19.5 points (17 kills, 2.5 blocks) while hitting .406. Recca notched another double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Reigning PacWest Freshman of the Week,
Tenika Wentworth, helped out with 30 assists to go with 11 digs. Playing at libero for the second match in a row,
Kara Wong tailed 11 digs.
HPU next takes on cross-town rival Chaminade on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Priory.
