Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (February 7, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (2-0) started off the 2014 campaign with a pair of one-run victories over visiting Northwest Nazarene (0-2) on a cloudy day at Hans L'Orange Park. The Sea Warriors needed 10 innings in game one, but prevailed 4-3, and held on 6-5 in the nightcap.
The game one dramatics came courtesy of a pair of HPU veterans. With one out in the bottom of the 10th inning,
Derek Nakasato singled though the right side of the infield. After the second out,
Chad Bolibol clubbed a double to left center field; Nakasato went flying around third and scored the game winning run all the way from first base. A mobbing at home plate was how the first game of 2014 ended.
Tre Haliburton-Goeas picked up the win after surrendering just one hit in two and two-thirds innings. Starter
Rico Garcia pitched well (7 IP, 2 runs) but received a no decision.
Nakasato, Bolibol, and
Jordan Oshiro all had two hit games with Oshiro also swiping two bases.
The emotional high of the walk off win in game one didn't last long; NNU struck for three runs in the top of the first inning. Â
Â
HPU used a big fourth inning to earn the victory. With the bases loaded and two out,
Reid Akau was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Next, Oshiro worked a 10 pitch walk to plate another run.
Tyler Tokunaga then landed the big blow, a smoked two RBI single through the right side of the infield.
Reliever
Bryson Gauthe made the lead stand up, earning the win. The senior was tremendous, giving up one run in four innings of action. Â Â
Cody Ellenwood added two hits and an RBI as well as some impressive defensive plays at the hot corner.
The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow at Hans L'Orange Park, starting at 2:00 p.m.
