HILO, HI (April 12, 2014)- The Hawai`i Pacific Softball Team (16-21, 14-12) earned a split against UH Hilo (19-17, 12-11) on Saturday afternoon. The Vulcans took game one 3-2 and the Sea Warriors responded with a 9-1 win in game two.
Game one was a pitchers duel as neither side could manage a run though the first four innings.
HPU finally broke through in the fifth inning with a pair of unearned runs. The Vuclans added three of their own in the sixth, which proved to be enough for the victory.
In game two, the Sea Warrior bats came alive.
Charisse Tanabe homered in the second and fourth innings while freshmen
Kayla Sanchez and Nicole Vienna added home runs of their own.
Tanabe added a two-run double in the fifth as the Sea Warriors took game two 9-1 in five innings.
Kristen Caskey threw complete games in both sides of the doubleheader to go 1-1 on the day. In game two she allowed just one run on four hits while walking just one batter.
Tanabe finished the day with four RBI and a pair of runs scored. Toni Bayas and Vienna each had two RBI in the doubleheader.
The Sea Warriors will be back in action against Chaminade on April 19
th. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Howard A. Okita Field.
