SURPRISE, AZ (March 15, 2014) – Both Hawai'i Pacific Tennis Teams beat Point Loma 9-0 in neutral site matches on the eve of the start of the Pacific West Conference Championships.
The men's team (17-0) completed the regular season undefeated thanks to strong play up and down the lineup. It started in doubles as HPU won all three matches with Point Loma (6-16) being held to three games or less. The first doubles team of
Petr Michnev and
Thibaud Berland picked up a quality 8-2 win over the 13th ranked doubles team in the country.
Singles action saw two matches go to a decisive third set, but the Sea Warriors prevailed in both. Michnev,
Mattis Wetzel,
Adriano Locorotondo and
Clemens Graute each notched straight set victories.
On the women's side (15-5), HPU had similar success. The Sea Lions (12-11) again didn't muster more than three games in any doubles match, including an 8-1 walkover at first doubles by
Karen Ramirez and
Celina Goetti.
Singles play was also all HPU. All Sea Warriors won in straight sets, including
Lea Kruse-Utermann who waltzed to a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Magdalena Smejova had the "closest" match of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
Both teams will stay in Arizona for the PacWest Championships beginning tomorrow. The women's team will most likely face Point Loma in a rematch as the men will probably face Holy Names. The final matchups will be announced tomorrow at the coaches' meeting.
