Men’s Tennis Runs Away with All-PacWest Awards

HONOLULU, HI (May 22, 2014) – After a run to the national championship match and a near perfect season, the Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team dominated the 2014 PacWest Men's Tennis Awards. The Sea Warriors took three of the major four awards including Petr Michnev winning Player of the Year, Thibaud Berland taking Newcomer of the Year, and Hendrik Bode being named Coach of the Year.

HPU also landed three singles players on the All-PacWest team as well as two doubles teams. Michnev and Jaume Martinez-Vich earned spots on the first team with Berland making the second team. The doubles teams of Michnev/Berland and Martinez-Vich/Mattis Wetzel both got the nod on the first team.

Jaume Martinez-Vich finished the season 15-4 in singles and was awarded the National ITA Player to Watch, he is currently ranked #15 in the nation in singles. Martinez-Vich lived up to the hype after being named the PacWest Freshman of the Year last season.

Martinez-Vich, along with partner Mattis Wetzel, went 22-2 in doubles and are also ranked at #15.

Michnev was named PacWest Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. Michnez had another fabulous season, he was already named the PacWest Tournament MVP, West Region ITA Senior Player of the Year, and is ranked #2 in singles (15-2) and #1 in doubles (21-2).

Thibaud Berland was also selected as the National ITA Rookie Player of the Year. Berland is ranked at #35 in the nation in singles with his 17-3 record. In doubles, he is ranked #1 with Michnev (21-2).

Bode also repeated as PacWest Coach of the Year. He guided the Sea Warriors to a 23-1 record and the first appearance in the championship since 2003. HPU played one of the toughest schedules in the country, beating 15 ranked teams and a pair of Division I foes.
