HONOLULU, HI (June 30, 2014) – After hard fought seasons on the court and in the classroom, the academic accolades continue to roll in for two Hawai'i Pacific Tennis standouts.
Petr Michnev and
Celina Goetti have been named the Pacific West Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year for their respective sports.
Michnev, regarded as one the best men's tennis players ever at HPU, has also dominated the academic awards. For the past two seasons he has earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District and All-American Teams. The Czech native was graduate student working on his MBA with a 3.6 GPA.
On the court he was named an All-American in both singles and doubles this season, making him a seven-time All-American in his HPU career. Just this season, Michnev has already been named the PacWest Player of the Year (for the second consecutive year), the PacWest Tournament MVP (for the second consecutive year), and the West Region ITA Senior Player of the Year. He finished the season 15-2 in singles and ranked #2 in the nation. With
Thibaud Berland, Michnev is ranked #2 in doubles with a 21-2 record.
Goetti continues to turn heads on the academic side. She has also been named to the Capital One Academic All-District and All-American Teams in her career, twice on the All-District Team. This year she won the NCAA's Elite 89 Award, given to the player at the championships with the best GPA. At HPU, she was the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Australian has a cumulative GPA of 3.96 in Travel Industry Management.
Goetti ends her playing career as a seven-time All-PacWest selection, including all four years as a singles player. In 2014, she went 11-9 mostly at second singles and was ranked #12 in the west region. The senior went 14-11 at mostly first doubles with her partner,
Karen Ramirez. In her four-year HPU career Goetti went 43-25 in singles and 66-20 in doubles. Â
Goetti will be most remembered at HPU for her match-clinching comeback performance at #2 BYU-Hawai'i her junior season, it was first such win in program history.
Michnev and Goetti will now be placed on a ballot with the winners from the other sports to determine the overall male and female PacWest Scholar Athlete of the Year.Â
