Box Score KANEOHE, HI (September 13, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (2-0-1) battled to a 1-1 tie in a physically hard game against the University of Hawai'i Hilo (2-0-1) on Saturday afternoon at Atherton Field.
The Sharks, who were able to record two wins in the first two games of the season, started with a good header from midfielder
Breanna Gaddis after a corner that scraped barley over the crossbar (2').
The following minutes presented a fast and balanced game between the two aggressive teams.
Both teams were able to create chances but neither was able to overcome the opposing defense until minute 43. After a rebound from the crossbar, junior
Erika Ellis put the Sharks on the board, sending the ball in the right corner of the goal.
"We had some difficulties with the direct play of Hilo, but I am happy and relieved after my first goal of the season and I am looking forward to the next game," said Ellis after the match.
Following was a balanced game, played fast and aggressive, resulting in a total of three yellow cards.
In the 52nd minute the Vulcans tied the game with a short distance shot after a tumult in the box.
Both teams would have its chances in the remainder of the match, but neither one was able to take the lead. Lexie Cameau got off a quality shot with a good free kick in the 88th minute of the game, but did not cash in.
After a pair of scoreless overtime periods, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
HPU finished the match with a 13-12 advantage in shots, including five shots on goal.
Head Coach
Gina Brewer commented on her team's first tie of the season, "Today was a tough played game. Hilo played very direct so it was challenging for us to get ahold of the ball and play our style."
The Sharks will play one more game in Kaneohe on September 16 at 3:00 pm against Chaminade University before they take off to the mainland.
