Box Score Women's Basketball Stung by Top-Ranked Hornets
MANOA, Hawaii (November 26, 2015)—The Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team turned in a valiant effort on Thanksgiving, but could not overcome an obvious size disadvantage and fell to Div. II top-ranked Emporia State (Kan.), 63-53, at Saint Francis School to open the Oahu Thanksgiving Classic.
The Sharks (2-3) were led by 18 points from
Breanna Mackenzie, whose offensive prowess helped HPU moved to within two points of the lead early in the second half. However, the Sharks were held to 31.6 percent shooting from the field and were out-rebounded 55-36 by the larger Lady Hornets squad.
Brianne Yasukochi chipped in nine points for HPU, while teammate
Cece Pearl added eight points, six rebounds and a team-best three assists from her post position. Sharks sharpshooter
Stephanie Louie nailed two 3-pointers, while HPU converted on just three of their 13 3-ball attempts.
The Lady Hornets (5-0) received 18 points from Sandra Ngoie, who also pulled down 10 rebounds. Emporia State was also powered by eight points and 11 rebounds from Kathryn Flott.
HPU returns to the hardwood on Friday to challenge Western Washington to wrap up the Classic at 3 p.m. at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie.
