KONA, HI (February 15, 2015) – The second ranked Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (3-0) won both its matches on Sunday in Kona. HPU won the opener 7-2 against UC San Diego (3-3) and the swept UH Hilo (4-8) 9-0 in the second match.
The Sharks lost their first match of the year at first doubles against UCSD. However, the doubles team of
Maik Burlage and
Yann Renault picked up an 8-4 win while
Jaume Martinez-Vich and
Jakub Hadrava won at third doubles to give HPU the lead.
In singles action, HPU took the top three spots to clinch the match. Burlage was again strong with a 6-4, 6-0 win. Newcomer
Marko Lenz continued his fast start to his HPU career with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 win at first singles. Eleventh ranked
Thibaud Berland (7-5, 6-2),
Clemens Graute (6-1, 6-4), and Renault (6-4, 3-6, 10-4) also earned singles victories.
After a break of a few hours, HPU returned to court and dispatched UH Hilo with little issue. HPU only lost a combined two games at first and third doubles. Burlage and Renault had the "closest" match of the competition, winning 8-4 for the second time.
Burlage was perfect in singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 in the third position. The rest of the team wasn't far behind as no Shark lost more than four games.
The Sharks head home and wait for the Vulcans to visit for a rematch on March 5th at 11:00 am at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP).
