Box Score 2 KANEOHE, HI (February 15, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific University Softball Team (7-1) split the series against Pacific University (3-3) today at Howard A. Okita Field. The Sharks got a walk-off win in game one (4-3) but couldn't comeback in game two and lost their first game of the year 5-4.
Game one of the series was, for much of the game, a pitcher's duel. Starter
Kristen Caskey was able to scatter seven hits over the seven innings she pitched.
HPU scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by
Toni Baysa.
Pacific struck for two in the sixth to give it a one run lead. The next inning, the Boxers piled on an insurance run to push the lead to 3-1.
The Sharks were not done though. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the dugout seemed reenergized. With two on and two out, it was Baysa again delivering the big hit, as she drove in two runs on an RBI double over the shortstop's head.
Kiana Wolfe then struck the killer blow and singled to right field to score the winning run in Baysa.
Caskey improved to 3-0 on the year and continues to give the Sharks solid outings.
Game two was not the best game by the Sharks. Pacific jumped out to a quick one run lead in the first.
The Boxers extended their lead by two in the third inning, capitalizing on a couple of key Shark errors.
Pacific struck again for runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but not before the Sharks would score three in the bottom of the fourth.
Chelsea Cramer doubled for two RBI to bring the Sharks within prime striking distance. Cramer, the team's top hitter right now, was followed by a single by
Nicole Viena which drove her in.
However, after five innings HPU still trailed 5-3.
In the bottom of the sixth
Dorian Acierto singled through the right side to drive in
Sienna Santiago and inch ever closer to tying the game. Unfortunately for the Sharks, the comeback was not in the cards this game as they fell with the tying and winning runs on base.
The Sharks next open PacWest play with BYU-Hawai'i at Howard A. Okita Field on February 21st at noon.
