HONOLULU, HI (March 10, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (7-0) controlled singles play enroot to a 6-3 win over a talented Division III team, Emory (4-3). The Sharks found themselves in an unfamiliar place, behind. Emory took a 2-1 lead after doubles play but HPU had too much fire power in singles.
The first doubles team of
Thibaud Berland and
Marko Lenz made the game look easy with an 8-1 win. However, their fellow Sharks sputtered and HPU was behind 2-1 headed to singles.
HPU was overpowering at the top of the singles lineup with Lenz (6-1, 6-2) and Berland (6-0, 6-1) each earning easy wins. Although not losing a set,
Maik Burlage (6-4, 7-5) and
Jakub Hadrava (7-5, 6-2) had tough matches but prevailed.
Clemens Graute had the match of the day, gutting out a 7-5, 7-5 win.
HPU next embarks on its toughest road trip of the year, the Sharks head to San Diego to play six matches in seven days. Coach
Hendrik Bode's bunch will get a rematch of last year's national final with #1 West Florida, also on the schedule is #5 Armstrong Atlantic, #12 Azusa Pacific, #17 UC San Diego, #22 St. Edwards. HPU opens with #42 Point Loma on Thursday.
