MANOA, HI (March 27, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (14-0) was smoking on Friday morning with a 7-2 win over Division I UC Davis (13-4) at the UH Tennis Complex.
Playing for the first time since being ranked #1 in the country, HPU looked the part. HPU was on fire, almost literally. A fire broke out near the courts during doubles play, ash rained down on the courts in singles, reminiscent of a Hollywood volcano movie.
Distractions aside, HPU took two of the three doubles matches to lead going into singles. The fifth-ranked pair of
Thibaud Berland and
Yann Renault won 8-6 as the duo of
Maik Burlage and
Marko Lenz won by the same count.
The Sharks took five of the six singles matches including a gutsy 7-5, 7-5 win by
Jaume Martinez-Vich at the third position. Lenz (6-4, 6-1), Burlage (6-2, 6-2),
Jakub Hadrava (6-4, 6-2), and Renault (6-0, 7-5) all won in straight sets.
The Sharks now head to the mainland for a four-game road trip, beginning with #2 West Florida on April 1st.
