Baseball Caught by Cougars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AZUSA, CA (March 28, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (12-13, 9-11) dropped another pair of games against Azusa Pacific resulting in a series sweep by APU (24-8, 14-6). APU out slugged HPU 15-11 in game one and then escaped with a 1-0 win in game two.

Game one started with APU taking a one-run lead in the second inning.

The Sharks retaliated with a rally inning of their own. Nolan Barraza walked in a run with the bases loaded to tie the game. The next batter, Codey Ellenwood, reached on a throwing error by his counterpart at third base, scoring two more runs for the Sharks.

The lead didn't last long as APU retook the advantage in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs to make it 5-3. APU continued this trend throughout the rest of the game, not putting up a zero in any other inning, eventually leading to a 15 run outing by the Cougars.

The Sharks never gave up though. In the sixth inning, Bronson Aiwohi doubled to right center to clear the bases for three RBI of his own.

In the eighth inning, Ian Arciaga started off the scoring with a solo homerun to left field, marking his first homerun at HPU. Later in the inning, two singles and two fielder's choices led to four more Shark runs.

However, the boys just couldn't put enough up on the scoreboard and lost 15-11.

Ryan Torres-Torioka continued to swing a hot bat in the series, going 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Game two was the exact opposite of game one. The second game lasted just under two hours as the crowd was treated to a wonderful pitchers' duel.

Ethan Kalin made his first start of the year, after coming out of the pen for the Sharks to start the year. He went four and two-thirds innings giving up five hits with four punchouts, keeping the Cougars off of the scoreboard.

A run in the fifth was the bullpen's only blemish but it potentially cost Kalin.

The Shark offense was completely shut down, limited to five singles. HPU left multiple runners on base just once, in the second inning.

Aiwohi remains red hot since becoming the Sharks' starting second baseman; he ended the day with three RBI in a 4-7 effort at the plate while scoring a run.

The Sharks now head to Point Loma in San Diego, game one of the series is on Thursday (April 2nd).
