Baseball Remains Perfect in PacWest

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (March 5, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific baseball Team (11-2, 8-0) finished up the series with Holy Names (10-10, 2-6) with a dramatic sweep, after taking both games on day one.  HPU got a walk-off win in game one (10-9) before dominating the nightcap (6-0).

In game one, the Sharks jumped out to a seemingly commanding eight-run lead over the course of the first six innings, while starting pitcher Brandon Van Stone coasted along. Derek Nakasato was once again a key to the Sharks steady rally as he collected a triple and single in the first six innings while driving in two runs.

However, in the seventh inning Van Stone ran into some trouble and saw the lead reduced to 8-2 after a few hits. Then Holy Names' power surged and a three-run homerun changed the attitude of the game.

In the eighth, Jordan Deponte, HPU's closer, came in for the six-out save, but the lead slipped away as the Hawks were able to tie the game and eventually take the lead in the top of the ninth.

However, the comeback kids had something to say about that one run deficit.  Ryan Torres-Torioka led off with a pinch hit walk, Reid Akau then moved him over with a sac bunt. Jordan Oshiro, who is off to a super hot start, drove him in to tie the game.

After both Tyler Tokunaga and Chad Bolibol walked, it was up to Codey Ellenwood to win the game with two outs. "Bird" came through with another walk off hit as he singled through the right side for his second game-winning hit of the season.

Game two was purely one sided as Shark starter Harley Holt dominated the Hawks lineup inning after inning. Holt ended up throwing a complete game shutout, scattering just three hits throughout his outing on just 85 pitches, improving to 2-1 on the year.

The Sharks offense was once again steady throughout the entire game, as they continue to play perfect small ball without a homerun to date. The Sharks scored three runs within the first two innings, one of which came on a Steven Camberos double down the left field line.

Later in the fifth inning, HPU put the game away scoring three runs in the inning. The scoring was started by Nolan Barraza when he doubled home Nakasato which was followed by a Chad Bolibol single that scored Barraza.

The Sharks ended the series winning 6-0, and completing the four-game sweep. This is the second series sweep the Sharks have had in a row, as they swept Fresno Pacific over last weekend.

The Sharks next take on Dixie State on Saturday, March 14th with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 pm and game two scheduled for 5:30 pm.
