PENSACOLA, FL (April 1, 2015) – The top ranked Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team (15-0) let the country know that its recent rise to #1 was no fluke with a 6-3 win at #2 West Florida (18-2).
Coach Bode's switch of
Thibaud Berland and
Yann Renault (ranked 5th) to first doubles continues to pay dividends for the Sharks. HPU's top pair beat the #1 doubles team in the country 8-4.
Jakub Hadrava and
Jaume Martinez-Vich gave HPU a 2-1 lead after grinding out a 9-7 win at third doubles.
HPU then silenced the hostile West Florida fans by winning four of the six singles matches. HPU's top three players all earned victories over ranked opponents.
Marko Lenz (#2) made short work (6-4, 6-1) of the #25 player at first singles. Berland (#8) picked up a straight set win (6-3, 6-4) over the 9th ranked singles player while Martinez-Vich (#15) had a similar experience (6-3, 6-2) beating the #31 player. Renault also won his match (6-4, 6-4) at sixth singles to help send a message to the rest of the nation.
After falling to West Florida in the 2014 National Championship, HPU has beaten the Argos twice this season.
The Sharks face #10 Valdosta State tomorrow in a neutral site match in Pensacola.
