Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (April 10, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (15-18, 11-15) took on in state rival UH Hilo (6-27, 4-21) today to start the 12-game season series. HPU used excellent pitching in game one winning 4-0 and then got a 4-3 walk-off win in 12 innings in game two.
Game one was briskly paced to say the least, lasting just under two hours (1:47). Shark ace
Rico Garcia felt good to be on his familiar home mound at Hans L'Orange Park and was dominant over the Hilo hitters.
HPU struck the opening blow in the third inning. Senior centerfielder
Jordan Oshiro laid down a beautiful safety squeeze bunt to score
Bronson Aiwohi and take the lead.
In the next inning, fellow outfielder
Austin Inabata gave the Sharks a three-run lead, when he stung a single out to right field to drive in two.
Later, in the seventh inning, Oshiro once again delivered as he drove in Aiwohi with a single into left field.
Garcia (4-4) finished out the game, throwing the shutout victory. He allowed just two hits over nine innings and struck out 11 batters, while walking only one.
Chad Bolibol continued on his hot second half of the season, going 3-4 at the dish with a stolen base.
The Sharks started game two's scoring off in the first inning. After Oshiro led off with a single and stole second,
Tyler Tokunaga singled him home, driving the ball through the right side of the infield.
In the third inning, Hilo evened up the score with a run of its own.
HPU waited until the seventh inning to retake the lead. Aiwohi drove in
James Carraway on a lined single to center field.
In the ninth, the Sharks shot themselves in the foot with an error that ended up costing them the lead and sending the game into extra frames.
The fans were treated to some quality bonus baseball, as both teams seemed poised to strike in the eleventh but just couldn't get the big hit.
In the 12th inning though, Hilo managed to push across the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly with one out.
The Sharks didn't give up though and put together their own rally. Tokunaga led off the inning with a double down the right field line.
Nolan Barraza then followed by doing his job and sacrifice bunting Tokunaga over to third. Bolibol proved he is clutch when he singled on the infield, tying the game. Bolibol then stole second base for his second stolen bag of the day.
Austin Inabata drove home Bolibol after reaching on a fielding error by Hilo's first baseman, ending the game in walk-off style.
Cody Ells (1-2) earned the win, throwing all three of the extra innings. Starter
Harley Holt received the no decision after going nine innings allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits while sitting down six Vulcans on strikes.
The Sharks go back at it against the Vulcans of UH-Hilo tomorrow for another doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park. Game one is set to start at 2:00 pm with game two following with a 5:30 pm start time.
