Baseball Wins Fifth in a Row in Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (April 11, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (17-18, 11-15) took both games in the second doubleheader against local rival UH-Hilo (6-29, 4-21). Today's games were non-conference but the results were the same, HPU won 19-7 and 8-5.

After holding the Vulcans down to start game one, HPU hung a nine spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning.

The Sharks went on to score multiple runs in each of the first four innings, making the score 18-1 by the fifth, all but putting the game in the win column already.

In the sixth, the Sharks added one more onto the pile of runs before UH-Hilo finally started to score. The Vulcans scored one in both the seventh and ninth innings and put up four runs in the eighth. Despite the late burst, the game was never in doubt.

Shark starter Brandon Van Stone (2-3) threw well, he went six innings in the blowout before giving way to the bullpen. He allowed just one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.

James Carraway was the man of the game at the plate. He went 5-6 with a double, triple, three runs scored and four RBI.

There were many standouts for HPU. Ryan Torres-Torioka went 4-5 with two RBI, Codey Ellenwood and Nolan Barraza both had three hits and split five RBI, and Tyler Tokunaga and Jordan Oshiro both went 2-3 at the plate and also combined for five RBI.

In game two, the Sharks continued to roll, putting up eight runs over the first four innings to take an early and dominant lead.

Going into the seventh inning, the Sharks had an 8-1 lead. However, the Vulcans made the game interesting, scoring four runs before Casey Duenas slammed the door.

The Sharks were led by junior first baseman Nolan Barraza who went 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. The other five RBI were all produced by different Sharks.

Starter Ethan Kalin (3-1) worked effectively and quick. He went six innings on the mound and threw just 66 pitches as an indication of his quality performance. He gave up just one run on four hits and struck out four.

Duenas earned his first career save as he came into game in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and HPU up three. He got the first batter he faced out on a line drive that third baseman Ellenwood snagged in the six hole to end the game.

The Sharks continue the series with UH-Hilo with a doubleheader tomorrow at 11:00 am at Hans L'Orange Park.
