Baseball Ends Trip with Win, Splits Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCO, CA (April 4, 2015) - The Hawaii Pacific Baseball Team (13-18, 9-15) finished off its long 14-game road trip today in California playing a doubleheader against NAIA California State San Marcos (22-11). The Sharks earned a split in the short two game series, winning the second game 9-6 after dropping the opener 8-7.

The Sharks lost the first game to the Cougars after falling behind early. HPU made it interesting in the end however, showing its resilience even after this tough road stretch.

The Sharks struck first with a run in the top of the first when Nolan Barraza hit a ground rule double to drive in the first run of the game.

CSSM quickly erased the deficit however, scoring three in the bottom of the inning.

Later, in the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars extended their lead by four, stringing together five hits and capitalizing on two Shark errors.

In the seventh, the Cougars added one more insurance run on a homerun, to make it 8-1, which proved crucial in the outcome of the game.

The Sharks got back to the attack in the top of the eighth inning. Ryan Torres-Torioka tripled to left center field to score two. Later in the inning, Tyler Tokunaga reached on an error, scoring Torioka. Bronson Aiwohi's safety squeeze scored a run later in the inning, but he was thrown out at first on the play. Barraza capped off the rally for the Sharks with a single through the hole to score two more, putting the score at 8-7 in favor of the Cougars.

In the ninth though the Sharks couldn't get anything going and fell in the opener.

In the second game, the Sharks would not be denied their win, especially Chad Bolibol, who put together a career day at the plate.

Bolibol started the scoring for HPU when doubled down the left field line driving in one. The Mililani product later scored on a Codey Ellenwood single through the left side of the infield.

In the second inning, the Cougars scratched across a run and in the third took the lead with two more.

But in the fourth, Austin Inabata came through and tied the game with a triple to right center to score Torres-Torioka. Bolibol struck again with a single to center for another two RBI.

In the fifth inning, the Cougars put one more on the board to make it a 5-4 game in favor of the Sharks.

HPU struck again in the sixth inning on Bolibol's RBI groundout to first base to increase the lead to two. San Marcos tied the game up at six in the bottom of the sixth with two runs of its own.

Bolibol was a man possessed. In the eighth, he hit a moon shot to left field for his first homerun of the season, driving in three more runs, and finishing his tally at seven RBI for the game.

The Sharks held on to the lead and earned the win.

Jordan Deponte (2-1) received the win after five and a third innings of relief, replacing starter John Albert.

The Sharks now return home to start the first of 12 consecutive games against Hawai'i rival UH-Hilo on April 10th at Hans L'Orange Park with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 pm.
