HONOLULU, HI (May 29, 2015) – As expected, the Hawai'i Pacific Men's Tennis Team was ranked second in the country in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rankings.
Thibaud Berland was named an All-American in both singles and doubles.
Marko Lenz and
Jaume Martinez-Vich were recognized as All-Americans for their outstanding singles play as
Yann Renault was selected as an All-American for his superior doubles play.
The Sharks, who were ranked #1 in two of the five polls, finished second after advancing to the national final for the second consecutive season. HPU went 24-1 on the year which included a perfect regular season. HPU, the PacWest Champions, beat 12 teams that were ranked in the top 25 including #1, #2, #4, #5 and #6. HPU's first four postseason matches were won by a combined 20-0 score.
Berland earned his fourth All-American honor in just two years after making it in singles and doubles last year as well. He was also named the regional ITA Player to Watch and made the All-PacWest first team in singles after going 16-2, in the second position. The HPU Team MVP is also ranked #6 in the nation in singles. In doubles, he earned a spot on the All-PacWest first team with partner Renault; the pair is also ranked #2 in the nation.
Lenz burst onto the scene in 2015 and left an imprint, being named an All-American and winning national Rookie of the Year. Lenz didn't lose all year in singles (21-0), was ranked #2 in the nation and was named to the All-PacWest first team. He was also 21-4 in doubles play, with five wins over nationally-ranked doubles pairs making the All-PacWest second team. The PacWest also chose Lenz as its Newcomer of the Year.
Renault, always a productive player at HPU, stepped up his game to a new level in 2015 and earned his first All-American honor. Along with Berland he was ranked #2 in the nation in doubles, the pair went 14-2 in the second half of the season. The Frenchman also went 11-0 in singles.
This is the third All-American honor for Martinez-Vich in as many seasons. The Spaniard went 13-3 on his way to being ranked #15 in the nation. The junior saved his best tennis for the national tournament, nearly clinching the title. He also got the call to the All-PacWest first team in singles as well.
