Box Score HONOLULU (January 14, 2016) – In a game that was bogged down by 53 total turnovers, the Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team overcame its offensive struggles and dominated Dominican University (Calif.) 66-54 in a PacWest Conference matchup at Blaisdell Arena.
The Sharks (9-5 overall, 6-1 PacWest) leaned on
Cece Pearl, who poured in a game-high 17 points and connected on four 3-pointers, while
Aminata Cole cleaned up in the post with 18 rebounds and eight points.
Sophomore
Breanna Mackenzie scored 16 points and connected on six-of-11 shots from the field. Mackenzie has led the Sharks offensively as of late having scored 85 points over her last three games; she is currently averaging nearly 17 points per game on the season.
Spencer Gray posted eight points, corralled five boards and dished out three assists, while
Brianne Yasukochi also notched three dimes from the guard position.
The Sharks will aim to improve upon their 27 turnovers committed throughout the contest. HPU also struggled at the free throw line, converting 13-of-23 attempts from the charity stripe. On a positive note, HPU forced 26 turnovers, turned the Dominican miscues into 29 points and held the opposition to just 29.7 percent shooting from the field.
The Penguins (9-5, 5-2) were buoyed by Allyssa Weatherd's 15 points, while Taylor Donnot dropped 14 points.
HPU, which finished a program-best 25-5 last season and made it to the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, returns home to host PacWest-leading Academy of Art University on Jan. 16 at Blaisdell Arena at 1 p.m.
