Box Score HONOLULU (January 16, 2016) – After being outscored 26-9 in the third quarter, the Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team could not overcome the hefty deficit and fell to Academy of Art University 82-72 in a PacWest Conference matchup at Blaisdell Arena.
The Sharks (9-6 overall, 6-2 PacWest) leaned on double-double machine
Aminata Cole who cleaned up in the post with a game-high 13 rebounds to accompany 10 points and three blocks.
Sophomore
Breanna Mackenzie led the squad with 18 points despite fouling out early in the fourth frame. The sharpshooter connected on six-of-11 shots from the field and drained three treys. Mackenzie has led the Sharks offensively as of late having scored 103 points over her last five games; she is currently averaging slightly more than 17 points per game on the season.
Janessa Manzano helped spur the Sharks offense with seven assists, while forward
Jessi Reeves chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds as well as two steals.
HPU saw three of its players foul out as 54 total fouls were called in the game. The Sharks struggled at the free-throw line, making 13-of-27 from the charity stripe. The home team also committed 19 points that led to 24 points for the opposition.
The Urban Knights (14-5, 9-0) were led by Sha'Nice Storey's game-high 21 points, while Jasmin Guinn chipped in 19.
ARTU took a 43-42 halftime advantage after forcing seven HPU turnovers that led to 14 points. The Sharks also missed eight free throws in the first half after shooting 38.5 percent from the line.
HPU, which finished a program-best 25-5 last season and made it to the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, returns home to host nationally-ranked California Baptist on Jan. 21 at Blaisdell Arena at 4:30 p.m.
