Box Score HONOLULU (January 21, 2016) – A sluggish second half squashed the Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team's upset bid of sixth-ranked California Baptist University as the Sharks fell 74-65 in a PacWest Conference matchup at Blaisdell Arena.
The Sharks (9-7 overall, 6-3 PacWest) were buoyed by 19 points from freshman guard
Janessa Manzano, who hit five treys and set a new career high for points in a game.
Sophomore
Breanna Mackenzie chipped in 17 points and the sharpshooter connected on three-of-six shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Mackenzie has led the Sharks offensively as of late having scored 120 points over her last six games; she is currently averaging 17 points per game on the season.
Forwards
Aminata Cole and
Jessi Reeves pulled down seven rebounds apiece and guard
Brianne Yasukochi helped spur the Sharks offense to the tune of five assists.
HPU struggled to match CBU's stellar shooting as the visitors connected on 10-of-24 (41.7 percent) from downtown. The Sharks made 24-of-64 (37.5 percent) shots from the field, but kept things close by out-scoring the opponents bench 27-16 and collecting eight steals, including four by Yasukochi.
The Lancers (16-1, 8-1) were led by Kamille Diaz (19 points) and reigning PacWest Player of the Week Cassidy Mihalko (14 points and eight rebounds).
The Sharks took a 36-35 halftime lead thanks in part to 12 first-half points from Mackenzie and 11 from Manzano, but could not duplicate the effort in the final two quarters. Three of HPU's losses this season have come against teams ranked seventh in the nation or higher.
HPU, which finished a program-best 25-5 last season and made it to the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, hits the road for a quick interisland trip to the Big Island to face UH Hilo on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.
