Box Score HILO, Hawaii (January 23, 2016) – After starting the game on a 10-0 run, the Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team never looked back, and compiled a 71-40 victory over interisland rival UH Hilo.
The Sharks (10-7 overall, 7-3 PacWest) snapped their two-game losing streak and were buoyed by 23 points, eight rebounds and three steals from sophomore
Breanna Mackenzie. The Aussie sharpshooter connected on two-of-five shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
Mackenzie has led the Sharks offensively as of late, scoring 143 points over her last seven games; she is currently averaging north of 17 points per game on the season.
Forward
Cece Pearl chipped in 14 points and collected six rebounds, while leading the offense with five assists. Fellow post player
Aminata Cole just missed out on a double-double after amassing 10 points and eight rebounds in just 21 minutes.
Point guard
Brianne Yasukochi hustled on both ends of the court and posted eight rebounds to accompany seven points.
The Vulcans (4-10, 4-5) were led by Vanessa Mancera's 12 points.
The Sharks took a commanding 40-20 halftime lead thanks in part to 16 first-half points from Mackenzie, as well as 10 points and six boards from Cole.
HPU, which finished a program-best 25-5 last season and made it to the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, returns to Oahu to host Chaminade in a PacWest clash on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 4:30 p.m. at Moanalua High School.
