Box Score 2 KANEOHE, Hawaii (January 31, 2016) - The Hawaii Pacific softball team started the 2016 campaign on a positive note by splitting a doubleheader via an 8-7 win and 6-1 loss against No. 20 Augustana (SD) College at Howard Okita Field.
The Sharks (1-1) claimed the win in the opener on an infield walk-off single by Dominique Walker that scored Kristy Washizaki, who singled in the tying run earlier in the home half of the seventh.
The Vikings (3-1) put up five runs in the first two innings, and got to Sharks hurler Kristen Caskey (1-0) early. However, the home team answered with a two-run homer off the bat of Kayla Sanchez and eventually took a 6-5 lead in the fifth frame. After allowing Augustana to reclaim the lead, HPU rallied to notch the win.
Sanchez led the Sharks offensively with her big blast and three runs scored, while Kiana Wolfe also chipped in two RBI.
Augustana racked up 16 hits in the rematch and saddled Paige Crawford (0-1) with the loss. Wolfe went 3-for-3 in the defeat with an RBI, while seven Vikings players each had two hits.
The Sharks return to action with a doubleheader against BYU-Hawaii (the games will not count toward PacWest standings) on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Howard Okita Field. First pitch is slated for noon.
