Box Score AZUSA, Calif. (February 1, 2016) – A buzzer-beating layup by Allison Greene with 0.3 seconds on the game clock prevented the Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team from pulling off the upset of No. 23 Azusa Pacific University, which escaped with a 57-55 victory at Felix Events Center.
The Sharks (12-8 overall, 9-4 PacWest) saw their three-game win streak snapped despite receiving a game-high 20 points from sophomore
Breanna Mackenzie, who sat out most of the first half due to early foul trouble.
Mackenzie also posted six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block, but the effort could not counter the 21 turnovers committed by HPU, which resulted in 25 points for the Cougars.
Freshman guard
Janessa Manzano also reached double figures in the scoring column, racking up 10 points on four-of-10 shooting, including two 3-pointers.
Aminata Cole worked hard in the post, accounting for six points, a game-high 11 rebounds and three blocks.
Mackenzie, a sophomore from Australia, has paced the Sharks offensively as of late, scoring 195 points over her last 10 games. She is currently averaging north of 17 points per game on the season and also averages 5.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 steals per contest.
The Cougars (18-3, 12-1) were led by Kelly Hardeman, who scored 15 points and pulled down nine boards.
The Sharks took a 28-27 halftime lead thanks in part to Manzano, who scored all her 10 points before intermission. The defeat marks the fourth loss by HPU against teams ranked in the Top 25.
HPU, which finished a program-best 25-5 last season and made it to the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, continues its five-game away stretch with a tilt against Concordia University Irvine on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
