Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Felician University

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, Hawaii (February 20, 2016) – The Hawaii Pacific baseball team split a doubleheader with Felician (N.J.) University, falling 9-6 in the opener and claiming the return matchup 7-3, as part of a five-game series at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sharks (7-1) leaned on starter Ethan Kalin (1-0) in the night cap as the southpaw picked up the win after surrendering an earned run on eight hits over seven innings, during which he also struck out seven. Reliever Brandon Bonilla came on to set down the side in order through the ninth frame to secure the victory after bullpen mate Kyle Detwiler tossed a scoreless eighth inning.

Reid Akau led the Sharks at the dish in the second game as the third baseman posted two hits.

The Golden Falcons (1-2) took the first game 9-6 after scoring two runs apiece in both the eighth and ninth innings. The comeback negated HPU's five-run sixth inning that, at the time, provided the home team with a 6-5 advantage.

Tyler Tokunaga went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and 3 RBI in the back-and-forth affair. Felician reliever Jesus Colon (1-0) picked up the win through two innings of scoreless action, while Sharks pitcher Cody Ells (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing the Golden Eagles' final four runs.

Bonilla, the son of former Major League slugger Bobby Bonilla, joined the Sharks after spending time at both Arizona State and Grand Canyon Universities. The hard-throwing relief option, who can let it fly at 97 mph, also boasts a biting slider that darts in toward right-handed hitters.

Bonilla was selected in the 37th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft in 2011 after his time at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., by the Colorado Rockies. He was then picked in 2014 via the 25th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, but chose instead to focus on earning his college degree; he's currently a graduate student at HPU.

The Sharks are aiming to improve on their 27-20 record last year, which included a 17-15 mark in conference play. HPU was picked to finish seventh in a very competitive 10-team PacWest Conference via a preseason vote by league coaches.

Under the guidance of 11th-year skipper Garett Yukumoto, who is the program's winningest coach with a 296-197-1 mark, the Sharks are following the pace set by 13 seniors on the roster, including Garcia.

HPU returns to Hans L'Orange Park on Sunday, Feb. 21 (noon/3:30 p.m.) for a double dip to round out the series.
