Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah (March 12, 2016) – The Hawaii Pacific softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on the road to Dixie State University, losing 13-1 in a mercy-rule shortened five innings and falling in the return matchup 7-4 in 10 innings, in a PacWest Conference matchup.
In the second game, HPU turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 advantage on a two-run home run from
Kayla Sanchez in the sixth inning that also scored
Dominique Walker, who reached on an error earlier in the frame. Pitcher
Paige Crawford (3-5) helped her own cause with a solo homer to provide HPU's other run, which proved monumental in earning the split.
Crawford, however, was saddled with the loss after giving up a three-run, walk-off home run to Jessica Gonzalez in the home half in the 10
th inning. In the loss, HPU's
Kiana Wolfe went 2-for-5 with 2 doubles and an RBI.
The Sharks (9-13, 5-5 PacWest) dropped the opener after starter
Alexis Morales (2-2) gave up 10 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in the first inning.
Mari Kajiwara drove in HPU's lone run of the contest, while Dixie's Josey Hartman hit a 2-run homer.
The Red Storm (15-7, 3-3) was led at the dish by Janessa Bassett, who went 7-for-8 with 4 RBI on the day.
HPU remains on the road for another double dip with Dixie State on Sunday (noon/2:30 p.m.) before returning to the Islands.
