LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – No. 1 Hawai'i Pacific University suffered its second loss of the season to NAIA's No. 1 ranked Georgia Gwinnet 8-1 on Tuesday at the Georgia Gwinnet Tennis Courts.
The Sharks (5-2) opened a four-match visit to Georgia with the loss. The Grizzlies (13-0) continued their impressive winning streak that includes wins over two NCAA Division I teams and three ranked NCAA Division II squads.
After winning all three doubles points, the Grizzlies clinched the match when GGC's Federico Duran won at No. 6 singles over the Sharks Gerrard Rodriguez 6-3, 6-3 for the fifth point of the match.
The only point scored for the Sharks was came at No. 5 with
Juan Erro beating Rafeal Coutino 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.
HPU fought for a point at No. 1 singles as the Sharks
Filip Dolezel, ranked 13th in NCAA II, won his first set against the NAIA's top ranked Kevin Konfederak in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4), but lost the second set 6-2 and the third 10-7 in a 10-point tiebreaker.
At No. 2 singles,
Jakub Hadrava fell to second ranked Jordan Cox 6-4, 6-3, while the Sharks were upset at No. 3 with 34th ranked
Torben Otto falling to Gilad Berman 2-6, 0-6. At No. 4 singles,
Jack Lyttle fell to NAIA 26th ranked Connor Clements 6-2, 6-2 and Gerrard Rodriguez lost to Federico Duran 6-3, 6-3.
The doubles were highlighted by the battle at No. 1 with GGC's Konfederak/Berman edging Dolezel/Hadrava 9-8 by winning the tiebreaker 7-5.
At No. 2 doubles, GGC's Cox/Clements downed Lyttle/Otto 8-2, and at No. 3 doubles, HPU's Erro/
Filip Soban fell to Coutinho/Duran 8-3.
The Sharks continue their trip by moving on to Savannah, Ga., to face NCAA Division II rival and No. 3 Armstrong State, on Thursday at 8 a.m. HST (1 p.m. EST).
