SURPRISE, Ariz. – Defending NCAA National Champion and sixth ranked Hawai'i Pacific University closed regular season action with an 8-1 non-conference win over No. 26 Western New Mexico on Monday at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.
The Sharks (13-4) won their seventh straight match, while the Mustangs (13-8) fell for the third time in four matches.
HPU was paced by play of
Filip Dolezel and
Torben Otto.
Dolezel, ranked seventh nationally in singles, defeated Liam Fraboulet 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Also a part of the ninth ranked doubles team with
Jakub Hadrava, the duo downed Tristan Da Lio/Vladimir Gnilozubov 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
Otto, ranked 10th nationally in singles, beat Jean Laurent Pageault 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, then joined with
Gerard Andres Rodriguez to beat Pageault/Fraboulet 8-4.
In the other singles action, Hadrava won at No. 3 over Gnilozubov 6-4, 4-6, 1-0, while Rodriguez beat Da Lio 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 at No. 4,
Filip Soban downed Sascha Brechtel 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 and
Juan Erron outlasted Blayze O'Keefe 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 6.
The lone point for the Mustangs came at No. 3 doubles, where Soban/Erro lost to O'Keefe/Zachary Grabovic 9-8.
The Sharks drew the top-seed for the Men's PacWest Conference Championships that open with quarterfinal play on Thursday. HPU meets eighth seed Sonoma State at 6 a.m. HST (9 a.m. PDT) to start the defense of their 2016 PacWest Crown and National Championship.
