Hannah Brown paced the way as the Hawai'i Pacific University women opened play at the Concordia Portland Invitational on Monday at the Riverside Country Club.
Saludares, a sophomore from Hilo, Hawai'i/Waiakea, who transferred from Concordia Portland, and Brown, a junior from San Tan Valley, Ariz./Combs, a transfer from Mesa Community College, both fired a 6-over-par 78 on the par 72, 5,995 yard Riverside tournament course. The duo is part of a large tie for 13th, two strokes out of the top 10 and seven strokes out of the tournament lead.
As a team, HPU posted a 337 for ninth, five strokes better than Saint Martin's in 10th at 342. HPU is six strokes behind Montana State Billings in eighth with a 331. Simon Fraser and Western Washington are tied for the lead at 300, with Holy Names third at 306.
Junior
Kassidy Dunn of Berlin, Pa./Berlin Borthersvalley carded a 87 in first round action for the Sharks, while freshman
Victoria McQuay of Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run added a 94 and freshman
Avery Weil of Colorado Springs, Colo./Maclaren put up a 107.
Individually, Holy Names' Sofia Young fired a 1-under 71, the only sub-par round of the day, to lead the tournament. Dominican's Claire Shubin, Western Washington's Lacy Overstreet and Simon Frazer's Jaya Rampuri all carded 1-over 73s and are tied for second.
The final round of the tournament is set for Tuesday with a shotgun start at 6 a.m. HST (9 a.m. PDT).
