HPU Selects Ed Kageyama as Men's and Women's Golf Coach

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University named Ed Kageyama as head coach of the men's and women's golf teams on Monday.

HPU Executive Director of Athletics and Community Relations Sam Moku announced Kageyama to replace Ryan Acosta who resigned the position earlier this month.

Kageyama is a 25-year Class A PGA professional who brings extensive coaching experience to HPU.  Having worked in the golf industry for three decades, Kageyama's coaching experience has taken him beyond Hawaii to many states on the mainland and countries in the Pacific Rim.

Kageyama has worked throughout the U.S. and Asia however, he is possibly best known for his coaching as Punahou School's golf program director encompassing eight teams and roughly 90 golfers ranging from grades 7-12.

Through Kageyama's 13 season tenure at Punahou, the program has won 17 state team titles which includes 11 girls team state titles and 10 individual state titles.   His teams have also won two team championships and two individual trophies at the Antigua National High School Invitational in Arizona.

Moku beams with confidence in Kageyama. "We are delighted to have Ed join our team and the wealth of experience, not only with the golf swing and coaching athletes, but also organizational skills that will allow the program to grow and achieve loftier goals we've set for ourselves." Moku continued, "Ed will give us a solid foundation for us to grow in the future."

In addition to coaching at Punahou, Kageyama is a principal with Activiter, Hawaii Golf Experience and Hawaii Golf Advisors.  Other work experience includes nearly 20 years as Billy Casper Golf's Hawaii & Asia-Pacific Regional Manager, having led the operations at Ka'anapali Golf Courses, Puakea Golf Course, Coral Creek Golf Course, Kukuiolono Park & Golf
Course, Kauai Lagoons Golf Course, Minami Golf Course (now Ko'olau Golf Course), Luana Hills (Royal Hawaiian Golf Club), Turtle Bay Golf Resort and golf facilities in China, Korea, Vietnam and Macau.

"This is not only a new chapter for HPU golf, it will be an entirely new adventure for us and we're excited to be taking the first steps," Moku said.

The Sharks will resume competition in February, when the women visit the Point Loma Spring Invitational in San Diego and the men in a dual with Chaminade.
