IRVINE, Calif. – For the fifth time this season, Hawai'i Pacific University guard
Amy Baum has been selected as the PacWest Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week.
Baum, a 5-7 freshman from Melbourne, Australia/Rowville Secondary, had one of the best weeks her career as she double-doubled twice and nearly triple-doubled in those games as the Sharks posted two wins and a loss this past week. Baum averaged 16.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 3.7 steals in the three games last week while shooting 62 percent (13-of-21) from the floor, 50 percent (5-of-10) from the 3-point arc and 91 percent (19-of-21) from the foul line.
She had career-highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds in the loss to Dominican and missed a triple-double with nine assists on Wednesday. On Sunday against Academy of Art, she equaled a career-high with 10 assists and scored 10 points, but missed the triple with nine rebounds. Last Monday against Chaminade she collected 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.
It's Baum's sixth weekly award as she also has been named the Defensive Player of the Week once this season.
Joining Baum with the weekly PacWest awards this week are Dominican's Natalie Diaz as the Player of the Week and Fresno Pacific's Julia LoCastro as Defender of the Week.
The Sharks are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the mainland for showdown rematch at first place Azusa Pacific. The game will be nationally live streamed as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase on ESPN3.com with tipoff set for 3:30 p.m. HST (5:30 p.m. PST) at the Felix Event Center.
