MURRIETA, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University seniors
Zach Kwan and
Chad Vander Dussen are tied for third and have the Sharks in the lead after Sunday's first round of the 2019 Biola Spring Invitational at the Bear Creek Golf Club.
HPU tallied a 327 for the day, two strokes better than Providence Christian at 329 in second and five in front of host Biola at 332.
Vander Dussen of Rancho Murieta, Calif./Pleasant Grove and Kwan of Sacramento, Calif./Granite Bay, both toured the par 72, 7,188-yard Bear Creek Course that is the home to stage two of the PGA Qualifying School, in 7-over-par 79 to stand two strokes behind leader Kyle McAbee of Biola at 5-over-77, and one in back of Damian Quintanilla of Providence Christian at 6-over 78. The duo is tied with Providence Christian's Nicholas Chavez at 79.
Vander Dussen collected just one birdie on the day, while suffering eight bogeys on the way to the 79. Kwan was up and down with an eagle, a birdie, two bogeys and four double bogeys for his 79.

Masato Yoshitsugu of Aichi, Japan/Bluffton S.C. Heritage Academy is in ninth at 11-over 83, while sophomore
Sirasit Prateepmongkol of Bangkok, Thailand/Ruamrudee International is tied for 11th with an 86, and senior
Chris McKnight of Wilton, Calif./Cosumnes Oaks posted an 88.
The tournament continues at Bear Creek on Monday with a 36-hole day for the second and third rounds in the 54-hole competition. The Sharks play in with Providence, Biola and Vanguard with a shotgun start at 5 a.m. HST (8 a.m. PDT) for round two and continuous play for round three.
