WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i Pacific University women are eighth after one round of play at the University of Hawai'i's 7th Annual Anuenue Spring Break Classic at the Waikoloa Golf Resort Kings Course.
The Sharks totaled 339 for the eighth spot in the eight team field that is composed of six Division I teams, a team from Japan and HPU as the only Division II entry. The Sharks are eight strokes behind Osaka Gakuin of Japan at 331 in seventh and 15 behind Towson in sixth at 324.
Oklahoma State leads after one round with a 301, seven strokes ahead of Arkansas State at 304 in second and Georgia Southern at 311 in third. Host Hawai'i is tied for fourth with Utah Valley at 314.
HPU was led in the opening round by senior Pranisa "Mint" Chimsuti of Pathumtani, Thailand/Satit Bilingual School who toured the par 72, 6,099-yard Kings Course women's setup in 7-over-par 79 to tie for 16th. Sophomore
Marli Koba of Seattle/Garfield carded an 84 for the second-best HPU round of the day.
Senior
Kaia Takaki from Honolulu/Kalani posted an 85, while senior
Lexandra So of West Covina, Calif./West Covina turned in a 91. Senior
Mika Walker of Honolulu/Kaiser posted a 92 for the opening round.
Utah Valley's Kaylee Shimizu fired an even-par 72 for a one-stroke lead after the first round, followed by Oklahoma State's Michelle Forsland at 1-over 73 for second. There is a 3-way tie between OSU's Han-Hsuan Yu, Arkansas State's Beth Ann Compton and OSU individual Lianna Bailey for third at 2-over 74.
The second round of the tournament begins with a shotgun start on Friday at 7:30 a.m. at the Waikoloa Resort's Kings Course. The Sharks tee off of holes 5 through 8, playing with Utah Valley, Towson and Osaka Gakuin.
